Welcome To The New Venture Alpaca Fiber Store
Alpaca fleece is a light-weight, lustrous and silky natural fiber. While similar to sheep’s wool in that it is a natural fiber, it is warmer, not prickly, and bears minimal lanolin which makes it nearly hypoallergenic. It is also soft and luxurious. In physical structure, alpaca fiber is somewhat akin to hair, being very glossy, but it's softness and fineness enables the spinner to produce satisfactory yarn with comparative ease. It is hollow as well, which makes it a good insulator. Alpaca is at least 3 times warmer than most sheep wools and much finer than most sheep wools, so it is not itchy. And alpaca fiber contains no natural grease such as the lanolin contained in sheep's wools. So you don't have to wash the fleece in hot soapy water 10 or 20 times before you can spin it. Most hand spinners spin raw, unwashed alpaca into yarn and then wash the finished yarn. Alpacas come in 22 natural colors from white to gray to black, brown and fawn and all kinds of colors in between. It's wonderful to make a garment that comes from all natural alpaca fleece with no chemical dyes in it and no mystery fibers blended in.
